Располагая разветвленной сетью агентуры в полиции и армии, ОАС действовала в метрополии и в Алжире методами массового террора (убийства, взрывы), организовала покушения на генерала де Голля, стремилась установить во Франции военно-фашистский режим. После завоевания Алжиром независимости (1962) перебазировалась в метрополию и соседние с ней страны, но, потеряв цель своей террористической деятельности, выродилась в шайку уголовных преступников и была быстро обезврежена. В борьбе с ОАС большую роль сыграли демократические силы (массовые демонстрации, комитеты борьбы с фашизмом и пр.). Главари ОАС, осуждённые на длительные сроки тюремного заключения, были амнистированы правительством уже в 1968.
